Obama Speech

I come here today with a modest attitude in front of the work before us, grateful for the confidence you have placed in me and mindful of the sacrifices made by our ancestors. I want to thank President Bush for his service to our nation and for the generosity and cooperation of which he has shown throughout this transition. Forty-four Americans have jury and the presidency. These words have been uttered with winds of prosperity and peace in calm seas. However, occasionally this oath is taken between storm clouds and raging storms. At that time, the United States has continued not only by the skill or the ideas of those who were in office, but because We, The People, we have stayed true to the ideals of our ancestors and to our founding documents.

This has been and so it must be with this generation of Americans. It is already clear that we are in the midst of a crisis. Our nation is at war with a network of hate violence and widespread. Our economy is very weak, as a result of greed and the irresponsibility of some people, but also our collective failure for not taking tough decisions, nothing prepared the country to a new era. Many people have lost their homes, jobs that have disappeared businesses that have gone down. Our health care is too expensive, our schools fail too, and there is growing evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our enemies and threaten our planet.

These are indicators of the crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable, but no less profound, is the loss of confidence that our country is living, a nagging fear that the U.S. decline is inevitable and that the next generation have to reduce their expectations. Today I say that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and many. We will not be overcome easily or in a short period of time. But I know something that the United States: we will overcome them. On this day we met because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. On this day we proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and outdated dogmas, which take too long strangling our policy.

We remain a young nation, but as the Scriptures say, it's time to put aside childish things. It is time to reaffirm our strong spirit, to choose our better history to push for this precious gift, that noble idea that has been passed from generation to generation: the promise made by God that all are equal, that we are all free and that everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue to maximize our happiness. In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never given. It must be earned. Our trip has never been characterized by short cuts or the content with little. There has been a way for cowards, for those who prefer leisure to work or those who seek only the pleasures of wealth and fame. Well have been more at risk, the entrepreneurs, who make things - some praised for it, but most of the time men and women whose work has gone unnoticed - that have guided us through the long and arduous journey toward prosperity and freedom.

As we took to shoulder their few worldly possessions and sailed oceans in search of a new life. As we worked in factories where workers are exploited and populated the West, endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth. For us, they fought and died in places like Concord and Gettysburg, Normandy and Khe Sahn. Again and again, these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked until his hands were raw so that we could have a better life. For them the United States was greater than the sum of our individual ambitions, greater than any differences of birth or wealth or ideology. It is a journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous and powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when the crisis. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and our services are no less necessary than last week, last month or last year. Our ability is still intact. But the time to adhere firmly to our beliefs, to protect narrow interests and to delay the unpleasant decisions, that time has certainly passed. Starting today, we get up, dust, and resume the work of remaking America. For look where they look, there is work to do. The economic situation demands action, bold and fast, and act, not only to create new jobs, but also to establish new bases for growth.

Build the roads and bridges, electricity networks and digital lines, which feed our trade and will keep us together. Return science to its rightful place, and exploit the technological wonders to improve the quality of health care and reduce cost. Harness the sun, wind and soil to fuel our cars and operate our factories. And we will transform our schools, colleges and universities to meet the needs of a new era. All this can do it. And we will. But some question the scale of our ambitions, which suggest that our system does not bear too many grand plans. They have short memories. They have forgotten what this country has already done, what men and women can get free when imagination meets the common purpose, and the need for courage.

Overstock Promo CodeMedifast Coupons What the skeptics do not understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them, that outdated political discussions which have long been consumed we are no longer valid. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but if it works, if it helps families find jobs with decent wages, health care they can afford a dignified retirement. Where the answer is yes, our intention is to advance. When the answer is no, the programs will cease. And those who manage the dollars of the citizens we must be accountable - to spend wisely, to reform bad habits, and do our work in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between citizens and their government.

The question is not whether the market is a force for good or for ill. Although its power to generate wealth and increase freedom is unmatched, this crisis has reminded us that, without an eye to monitor it, the market can spin, and that a nation can not prosper for long extends only to the privileged. The success of our economy has always depended not only on the size of our GDP, but also the reach of our prosperity, our ability to offer opportunities to anyone willing, not charity, but because it is the surest way to achieve the common good.

As for the common defense, its falsity repelled by the fact that we have to choose between our security and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, facing dangers that hardly one can only imagine, wrote a letter to ensure the rule of law and human rights, a long letter with the blood of generations. These ideals continue to illuminate the world and our own good, not give them up. So I say to all peoples and governments that now have an eye on us from the big cities to the small village that gave birth to my father know that America is a friend of every nation and every man, woman and child to find a future of peace and dignity, and we're willing to take the lead once again.

Recall that earlier generations fought fascism and communism not only with missiles and tanks, but with strong alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power can not protect itself, nor authorize us to do what we please. On the contrary, knew that our power grows when used wisely, our security emanates from the justice of our cause, the force of our example, the moderating qualities of humility and restraint.
